From Soil to Symbiosis: Exploring the New Biology of Plants — June 17

Please join us on June 17, at 10:30 am to learn about From Soil to Symbiosis: Exploring the New Biology of Plants presented by Margit Kaltenekker, Agriculture Agent, Douglas County Extension, She brings a passion for living soils and thriving plants to her role as Agriculture Agent with K-State Extension in Douglas County. She works with farmers and market gardeners to uncover the hidden partnerships between roots, microbes, and fungi, turning soil science into hands-on strategies for healthier crops, livestock, and communities.

Healthy soil is far more than minerals and organic matter — it is alive with intricate relationships. In this seminar, we’ll explore the fascinating new biology that reveals how plants, fungi, and microbes work together to cycle nutrients, build soil structure, and foster resilience. Topics will include the rhizophagy cycle, where plants actively “farm” microbes for nutrition; the role of mycorrhizal fungi in expanding root networks and storing carbon; and practical composting strategies such as Johnson-Su bioreactors and Elaine Ingham’s soil food web methods. Participants will leave with both a deeper scientific understanding and practical tools to nurture soil health in their own gardens and landscapes.

All of our education programs start at 10:30 am, are approximately one hour long, and are free and open to the public. You can attend the live presentation in the North room of the Dreher 4-H Family Building on the Douglas County fairgrounds, or attend online by registering before the presentation here. After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting.
